Guangzhou is best when you choose your district around the real purpose of the trip: Canton Fair, food neighborhoods, business meetings, or Greater Bay Area rail connections.
Arrival
Baiyun Airport connects well to the city, but transfers can be long if your hotel is in the wrong district. Guangzhou South is the major high-speed rail hub for Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and other regional routes.
Baiyun Airport
Good international and domestic gateway. Check late-night metro and taxi timing if arriving tired.
Guangzhou South
Key high-speed rail station, but not central. Build transfer time into hotel and meeting plans.
Pazhou
Best for Canton Fair access. Hotel prices and availability can change sharply during fair periods.
Where to stay
Tianhe is practical for business, malls, metro access, and a first-time base. Yuexiu and Liwan are stronger for older Guangzhou, Cantonese food, markets, and slower neighborhood walks. Pazhou makes sense if the fair is the whole purpose.
Transport
The metro is usually the backbone of a Guangzhou trip. Ride-hailing helps for late meals, factories, warehouses, and cross-district business routes. Do not assume the airport, Canton Fair, old city, and Guangzhou South are close to each other.
Food and daily basics
Guangzhou is one of China's most useful food cities for visitors: dim sum, roast meats, noodles, congee, seafood, desserts, and tea restaurants. If you are new to China, start with busy mall restaurants or established dim sum places before exploring small local shops.
First day plan
- Confirm whether trade fairs are affecting hotel prices and traffic.
- Save the Chinese name of your hotel, fair venue, or meeting address.
- Eat locally, but keep the first meal simple after a long transfer.
- Check the exact rail station before intercity trips.
Simple 3-day structure
- Tianhe or Yuexiu orientation, dim sum, and Pearl River evening.
- Liwan/old Guangzhou food and neighborhood route, or Canton Fair/business day.
- Shamian, markets, museums, or a rail day toward Shenzhen/Hong Kong if logistics allow.
Avoid
Do not book a hotel only because it is labeled Guangzhou. During Canton Fair periods, the wrong district can cost hours. Also avoid assuming every supplier, market, or station is metro-simple.
