Quick answer

Shanghai is the easiest first China landing: choose a metro-connected hotel, use it as a base, and keep Pudong, Hongqiao, and side-trip logistics clear.

Arrival

Pudong is the main long-haul international airport. Hongqiao is excellent for domestic flights and high-speed rail. Confirm airport and station names carefully.

Pudong

Main international gateway. Plan more transfer time to central districts, especially with luggage.

Hongqiao

Strong for domestic flights and high-speed rail. Very useful for Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and business routes.

Rail

Many fast routes use Hongqiao, but some trains use Shanghai Railway Station. Check before departure.

If this is your first China arrival, Shanghai is forgiving because English support, international hotels, metro coverage, and food options are stronger than in many cities. Still, airport transfers can be long, so do not build a tight arrival-day schedule.

Where to stay

Good first-time bases include People's Square, Nanjing Road, Jing'an, Xuhui, and areas near Line 2 if you want airport and rail convenience.

Jing'an and Xuhui feel calmer and polished. People's Square and Nanjing Road are central and convenient. Pudong can work for business, skyline views, or specific meetings, but check metro access.

First trip

People's Square, Nanjing Road, Jing'an, and Xuhui are easy central bases.

Business

Pudong or Hongqiao can work if meetings are concentrated there.

Side trips

Stay with easy Hongqiao access if Suzhou, Hangzhou, or Nanjing are priorities.

Transport

The metro is efficient and extensive. Taxis and ride-hailing are useful late at night or with luggage. Shanghai is also a strong city for walking by district.

Line 2 is especially useful because it connects major central areas with Hongqiao and Pudong, though airport-end travel can still take time.

Food and daily basics

Shanghai is useful for both local Jiangnan food and easy international options. For local basics, try soup dumplings, noodles, pan-fried buns, and neighborhood breakfast spots. For a low-stress first meal, choose a mall restaurant or a busy place near your hotel.

Shanghai is also a good city to test your China payment setup because there are many fallback options: hotels, malls, convenience stores, and metro stations.

First day plan

  • Test payment and metro access.
  • Walk one central district instead of over-planning.
  • Save hotel address in Chinese.
  • Use Shanghai as a base for Suzhou or Hangzhou later.

Simple 3-day structure

  1. Central Shanghai: Bund, Nanjing Road, People's Square, or Jing'an.
  2. Museums, French Concession/Xuhui, local food, and neighborhood walking.
  3. Day trip to Suzhou or Hangzhou, or a slower Pudong/riverfront day.

Side trips

Suzhou and Hangzhou are the easiest classic side trips. Nanjing works better as an overnight or longer rail route. Do not combine too many side trips with a short Shanghai stay; the city itself deserves unhurried time.

Avoid

Do not book a hotel far from a useful metro line. During major events, hotel prices can jump quickly. Also avoid assuming all "Shanghai" rail stations are interchangeable; Hongqiao and Shanghai Railway Station can mean very different transfers.
